Theatre In The Woods

HISTORY

Theatre in the Woods:
A Not-for-Profit Community Theatre
Sponsored by the Village of Riverwoods

Theatre in the Woods was founded in 1998 by Riverwoods residents Donna Lubow, Sandy Sagan, and Nutan Vaidya for the purpose of providing quality live theatre to Riverwoods residents. An additional purpose was to provide Riverwoods residents with opportunities to gain skills as volunteers working behind the scenes and performing on stage. Roy Stanger, the Mayor of Riverwoods at that time, was enthusiastically behind the idea of a community theatre in Riverwoods and offered financial support. Additional support was given by the Riverwoods Residents Association. The Village and Mayor Bill Kaplan continued to lend support.

Theatre in the Woods has evolved into an established non-Equity theatre on the North Shore. Our staff consists of theatre professionals as well as volunteers. Donna Lubow is our Artistic Director, and has worked with Imagination Theatre, Apple Tree Theatre, Academy Festival Theatre and Touchstone Theatre and is a co-founder of Highland Park Players and ARTicuLIT Readers Theatre, as well as a founding board member and regular director for Attic Playhouse in Highwood. Sandy Sagan was our Managing Director and Executive Producer for more than 10 years and has an extensive background as a volunteer. Current Managing Director and Executive Producer is Jeri Solomon and Associate Artistic Director is Kathie Keefe Howski. Both have been active participants in the theatre since it was founded. Actors and crew members come from the surrounding suburbs, Chicago, and even Wisconsin to participate in our plays. Audiences have grown substantially over the years.

Theatre in the Woods performed outdoors on the grounds of the Village Hall from 1999 – 2001, then moved to an indoor location at Ryerson Conservation Area in 2002. Zion Lutheran Church was our home in 2003, and that is where most of our rehearsals took place.  From 2004 until the present, our permanent performance space has been at the Estonian House, in Riverwoods.

Our first production in July, 1999, was OUR TOWN, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Thornton Wilder, and was presented outdoors at the Riverwoods Village Hall. The play, directed by Donna Lubow and produced by Sandy Sagan, was offered in celebration of the fortieth anniversary of Riverwoods, which was founded as a village in 1959. Over 500 people attended and were impressed with the quality of the production and the ambience of the outdoor setting. Our theatre was off and running.
